The birth place of Thacholi Othenan the legendary here of the Vadakkanpattu (ballads of North Malabar), Vadakara boasts a great martial tradition and was a flourishing trade and commerce center in ancient times.

Thacholi Manikkoth was the kalari of Thacholi Othenan. It was here that he practiced his martial feasts and spent long days in deep meditation before every poythu (duel).
